Asphalt is a very versatile form of road pavement material; it is used in parking lots, driveways, roadways, airports, racetracks, and more. It is the preferred choice over concrete by many for a multitude of reasons. The first question is: what are asphalt and concrete made out of? Asphalt is made out of stone, sand, additives, and liquid asphalt (petroleum). On the other hand, concrete is made from aggregate, sand, and water. The components in asphalt make a more flexible surface where concrete is a more rigid surface. This flexible surface is very adaptable to weather. Asphalt has the ability to withstand the harshest weather conditions, which is important in Florida.

Using asphalt is a more economical choice than choosing to use concrete. Projects being completed with asphalt take much less time to finish. The time it takes for asphalt to set is significantly shorter than concrete. This helps traffic flow more smoothly, roadways will have minimal closures, and it gives the ability to take advantage of off peak times such as nights and weekends. The material itself is also significantly cheaper than concrete. The sustainability of asphalt is top notch because it is often made from recycled materials. For that reason, asphalt roads can be dug up and used again giving it a life cycle that does not end! By doing this, we are able to preserve our natural resources making it better for our environment.

In this day and age, individuals are looking to get the best fuel economy that they possibly can. Pavement smoothness plays a big role in getting the most miles per gallon possible. Studies have shown that the smoother the surface of the road, the better that driver’s miles per gallon will be! Each state has different standards for asphalt and concrete with asphalt’s requirements being more severe than concrete. Using asphalt thus creates a smoother, quieter, and more skid resistant surface.
